A Delightful Company

Dearest Reader,

I am most eager to share with you a charming tale from last evening. As luck would have it, I found myself in the delightful company of a Boston Terrier while his parents had, quite fittingly, gone off to Boston for a few days. It seems only right that little Gugu should stay behind to represent the city in their absence!

This endearing four-year-old, known as Gugu, has captured my heart with his boundless affection. Time seems to take on a different rhythm in the presence of animals; their companionship fills our hearts to the brim, for their love is as pure as it is unconditional. What strikes me as truly marvelous is the way in which we, humans and animals alike, come to understand each other’s languages without the need for words.

There was, for instance, when Gugu made his desire to go for a walk very clear—a task that can seem difficult to understand for those unaccustomed to the ways of pets. Yet, Gugu was remarkably clear in his request. He stood by the door, casting expectant glances at his leash, clearly expecting us to take him outside. Equally, he understood my desire to shower him with affection. A simple gesture—a bend of the knees, a reach of the hands—was all it took for him to bound toward me, embracing me with all the warmth in his little heart, and eagerly demanding his much-loved belly rubs.

It strikes me, dear reader, how easily we show our love to animals without worrying about being misunderstood or rejected. Yet, when it comes to our fellow humans, we so often hesitate, putting up walls around ourselves and hiding who we really are. If we can understand the needs of animals, surely it should be even easier to understand each other. Maybe it’s time to let down those walls and show our true unmasked selves, so we can build the real connections we’re all looking for. Don’t you agree?

Now, should you have a pet of your own, I would be most delighted to hear of the bond you share with your dear companion.

Pray, do write to me and tell me how they fill your life with fun and laughter.

I’d love to hear from you! Share your daydreams and stories with me at nuraine.sadaf@gmail.com or share your thoughts in the comments.

Let’s bring a little bit of the past into our present, one letter at a time.

Yours lovingly,

Nuraine Sadaf

PS: My hand was tired and I ended up making mistakes while writing, apologies if you don’t find the letter perfect. But it just makes it so much more real and human. 🙂
