Book Review

I picked up this book while browsing a bookstore at an airport. I was flying from one home to another, in a phase of my life where I was questioning and doubting my past and future. While flipping through the pages, I discovered that Lilly Singh and I share a mutual friend named Anxiety Singh. That was it—I knew I had to buy this book. I got super excited and quickly read as much as I wanted right there at the airport, but thankfully, I decided not to rush. I wanted to give this book the time it rightfully deserved because I truly do want to be a triangle.
What an interesting title! Be a Triangle! Sure, why not? It’s such a unique thing to aspire to be. In the process of seeking answers to the question, “Who am I?”, this book, like a blessing, tells me to be a triangle. I thought, “Sure, thanks! That makes my life simpler.” Honestly, it did make my life simpler. Even though it is a short read, this book is precise and free of unnecessary elaboration. Sometimes, there’s no need for complicated explanations. Keep it simple—just be a triangle!
I love Lilly Singh’s writing style—crisp, entertaining, and funny. The illustrations in this book are super cute, too. I’m writing about her like she’s my friend because it felt that way. It’s like a friend who went from being lost to getting life into shape. This isn’t a book filled with mantras and inspirational quotes; it’s the author’s journey where she writes about the thoughts and ideas that have worked for her, and she shares them with us with a hope that it will work for us as well.
So here it is, points to remember on being a triangle:
A relationship with Ourselves – check in with yourself, introspect, and self-care.
A relationship with the Universe – give back to the world what you take from it.
Understand Distraction – categorise negativity, problems, and stressors as distraction.
Implement Design – get creative, make a plan, and follow.
That’s it—a simple and effective formula to keep ourselves on track when life throws problems our way. There will always be problems, but it’s important how we deal with them. Firstly it’s important to love, respect, and have a healthy relationship with ourselves. Meditate, not to have an enlightening experience but to untangle all the commotion. Give to the world, what you expect for yourself. Anything that doesn’t serve us is a distraction. We are all creative, we are all artists, push the distractions aside by getting creative. We don’t have to follow a plan that society has designed for us. We need to find ways on how to tackle problems and design life by only doing things that bring us happiness.
For a detailed, Lilly’s version of explanation, please go buy, rent, or borrow this book from your nearest library and read it. It’s a light, fun, and quick read, but quite impactful and I highly recommend this book!
