I don’t remember the last time I finished a book at this pace, in two days flat. Yellow Face is a fictional story of two friends, Athena and June. Athena Liu, a celebrated and successful published author, and June Hayward, a struggling writer whose career never quite takes off. Both of them love to write, but luck favors one over the other. Until it doesn’t.
After an unexpected twist of fate, June rises from the ashes, claiming the name and fame for herself in the world of publishing. Unfortunately, her fame journey is not a positive one, it comes with a steep price. She becomes famous for all the wrong reasons. Instead of enjoying her success, June is constantly worried about losing it all and is consumed by paranoia. She lies, she cries, she tries to prove herself, by yet again choosing an immoral path and doubles down on questionable choices – only to be criticized and hated. June spirals downwards, emotionally, physically, and mentally, leaving her haunted, hollow, and achingly alone.
Yellow Face is like Instagram or TikTok, addictive! As soon as there’s a lull in the story, BAM, another shocking turn of events get you hooked again. It is hard to put down the book, the story is gripping, compulsively readable, and disturbingly realistic. While I wouldn’t call it epic or mind-blowing, it is a fresh and entertaining story that is narrated uniquely. Yellow Face is a story that can belong to any of us, it brings to light the deep hidden desires, the dark impulses, and the thoughts each of us have but never act upon. Maybe that’s why this book is unputdownable, it’s uncomfortably real. If you enjoy reading about morally complex characters, then this book is super interesting and a must-read
