What is autism, and what does it feel like to live with someone who has autism? Josh Stehle, our superhero expert, invites you to explore these questions.
In ‘I am a Superhero Expert: Growing up with my Autistic Brother,’ Josh shares the touching story of his brother Zach, who is on the autism spectrum. It’s important to note that this isn’t a self-help guide, an encyclopedia on autism, or a sad tale. Instead, it’s a unique and deeply personal account filled with comic strips and a profound love for powerful heroes. Most importantly, it’s an inspiring and uplifting story of a real-life superhero.
Through his narrative, Josh highlights the fact that every individual has their own set of strengths and challenges. What comes easily to one person might be a struggle for another. Similarly, individuals with autism should not be treated differently or impatiently when they encounter difficulties that others find simple. It’s crucial that we refrain from passing harsh judgments or treating them rudely.
Josh aptly notes, “When people don’t understand something, they create their own truths about it, and that’s what they decide to believe.” This book reminds us that it’s not acceptable to judge or mistreat someone just because we don’t fully understand their experiences. It encourages us to be kind, loving, and accepting of everyone, regardless of their differences.
In ‘I am a Superhero Expert,’ Josh Stehle shares his experiences of what it’s like to live with a superhero and spreads awareness on autism. This book reads like a memoir, and it’s evident that the author poured his heart into it. In fact, I had the privilege of meeting and engaging in a delightful conversation with the author Josh Stehle myself!
One of the aspects I cherished the most in this book is the inclusion of mini comic thought bubbles, providing insights into Zach’s unique life experiences. Additionally, the heartfelt bond shared by the two brothers is beautifully portrayed throughout the narrative. After reading this book, I emerged with a greater understanding of autism and a newfound wisdom. Many times, I found myself nodding in agreement as certain traits within the autistic spectrum were described. My only wish is that the book delved a bit deeper into the aspects of autism.
I highly recommend ‘I am a Superhero Expert’ by Josh Stehle – it’s a must-read, a concise and engaging book on understanding autism.
